Transformer PD Location
Although fault detection schemes for transformers are well-established, there are few tools to locate the source of PD in a transformer. Each method is subject to different challenges making reliability and repeatability difficult to achieve in analysing the data. UHF methods are established for AIS equipment with the known benefits of sensitivity and immunity. Elimpus trialed a set up with a utility a few years ago using the same principles to detect PD and locate it within a transformer. This involved using window sensors and antennas through the drain valves. Data is then processed using same principles as AIS PD location using data from several sensors.
Arc Fault
Although fault location schemes for distribution systems are well-established, the branching nature of rural 11 kV networks can often result in areas where existing substation-based fault locators are unable to give accurate results. RAFL system will provide utilities with significant time savings in investigating the cause of intermittent and problematic arcing faults.
Engineers from Elimpus are entering the trial phase of an EIC funded project to develop a system utilising the reception of arcing fault radio signals to locate the position of the fault. To achieve this, several monitoring stations poles will accurately time the arrival of the arcing fault radio. Each monitoring station will upload both its position and the signal arrival time to a cloud server. A specially designed application running on an internet-enabled laptop will convert the data from up to 4 monitoring stations into the ground position of the arcing fault in real-time, allowing utility engineers to access the data in the field.
