Elimpus Engineer Awarded IEEE Innovation Prize

Aidan McIntosh – pictured top left in the photograph – joined Elimpus as a Development Engineer in October 2026. Aidan recently graduated from the University of Glasgow with a First Class degree in Electronic Engineering.
As part of his final-year studies, Aidan and his colleagues entered the MYOSA (“Make Your Own Sensor Application”) competition, organised by the IEEE Sensors Council. After successfully progressing to the final stage, Aidan was selected to represent the team at the IEEE Sensors Conference in Rotterdam, where he demonstrated their entry, BreathSense, to the judges and delegates.
The competition was a particularly fitting challenge for Aidan, as sensor technologies play an important role in the condition monitoring of electricity infrastructure assets. The project provided the perfect backdrop for Aidan to apply his Electronics Engineering expertise and innovative mindset that he now brings to his role at Elimpus.
In Aidan’s own words:
“Our device was a modified trombone mouthpiece that detected CO₂ in exhaled breath by shining a specific wavelength of light through the airstream. The CO₂ absorbs this light, so a sensor opposite the light source can be used to detect the concentration of CO₂. The application is to gather data on the relationship between breath activity and sound production, which could be useful for teaching or instrument design.”
We are pleased to report that Aidan’s entry was awarded a prestigious ‘Innovation Prize’ – one of only 3 awarded to the 16 finalists. Well done, Aidan!
