Elimpus Visits Parliament to Showcase Spot the Dog PD Monitoring Project

Elimpus recently visited the Houses of Parliament together with National Grid to showcase the exciting projects we have been working on. The aim of the event was to educate the ministers on National Grid’s Innovation projects, which included the Boston Dynamics Spot the Robot Dog (or Spot for short).

Spot delighted everyone with its bright presence as well as the incredible idea behind the project. The robot is going to be deployed to substations to monitor hazardous zones independently while sending live data of the site to service engineers. It will have Elimpus partial discharge monitoring equipment mounted on, as well as a robust Boston Dynamics PTZ (Pan-Tilt and Zoom) camera with thermal imaging, and a Velodyne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) unit to help it navigate through the site. Both the camera and the LiDAR unit can be seen on the pictures. The Elimpus monitoring equipment was not mounted on the robot at the showcase due to safety and space concerns.

This is a truly innovative project for the energy industry, as never before has there been so much data that could give such a detailed view of faults without putting anyone in harm’s way. Spot was called “inspiring” and a “delight” not only by the Minister of Energy, Michael Shanks, but by countless others who were excited by the project.

Elimpus Awarded Automated UAV PD Surveying Project

Elimpus had been awarded a second innovation contract to develop an automated PD survey by UAV (unmanned air vehicle). This project is a continuation to a trial investigation of using drones to perform a PD survey over an air insulated substation.

The original prototype used the M600 DJI drone. It was used as a proof of concept, which proved to be successful. This drone has been superseded by the more powerful and versatile M300 and M350 drones.

A bespoke custom PD payload will be used to integrate with the drone. The flight path, flight data, all PD results, images of suspect plant, will be transferred to the Elimpus NServer cloud solution. These PD results will be plotted on a user friendly mapping of the substation, pinpointing the areas of concern.

This UAV PD survey solution offers a number of benefits, such as faster surveys, reduced manpower, access to RHMZ (risk hazard management zones), and automated PD reports.

Elimpus – Our Innovative Approach To Partial Discharge Testing

There are numerous considerations when considering how to detect and monitor partial discharge in high voltage equipment. Elimpus’ approach to Innovative Partial Discharge Testing is straightforward. It should be easy to implement without the need for outages and is rapidly deployable. With this as the starting point, Elimpus provides both services and products that utilise radiometric principles in detection, location and online monitoring of partial discharge. Simple realisation of this is found in our PDtect®2 Portable which is non-contact, non-invasive, and requires only a single operator.
